Folk Song's Fascinating Words

Folk music is a reflection of the history of music through the ages, to modern day. Many of the great classical composers have drawn on folk tunes for inspiration for their symphonies and other great works. Similarly, the lyrics of folk songs provide a history of love, hate, politics and social change from the earliest days to the present. Hear is just one example:-

"27 Years Ago - Its been many years ago, but it seems like yesterday - The world it seemed to stop and watch our dawning of the day - We learned about our history the suffering and pain - Then something deep inside me said this cant remain the same. - We asked for civil rights they answered us with hate - With B Specials and the R - U C our spirits tried to break - They filled my street with soldiers with armoured cars and guns - I was only twelve years old when the troubles had begun. - Chorus: - I can see them now the people that I knew - Walking for tomorrow and a future bright and new - I can hear their voices singing in the wind - On the long march to Derry down by Burntollet bridge. - - 2. And then internment came the smoke it filled the air - Belfast was a battle field its people near despair - Young men taken from their homes in early morning raids - Tortured by the hundreds and like animals were caged - In little back street houses where we knew wrong from right - Was it any wonder that some would chouse to fight - People dying on our streets or on their way to work - In country lanes and byways and on H Block hunger strike - Chorus: - I can see them now the people that I knew - Dying for tomorrow and our future bright and new - I can hear their voices crying in the night - For those on bloody Sunday cut down by England might.
